Interest accrued on late-paid taxes in Finland amounted to EUR 12.2 million in 2023, according to figures published by the Finnish Tax Administration. This represents an increase of EUR 3.5 million compared with the previous year. Despite the higher interest total, the number of individuals who paid their taxes late declined. In total, 830,000 taxpayers paid taxes late in 2023, which is around 40,000 fewer than a year earlier. The majority of late payment interest—approximately EUR 11 million—arose from residual taxes. Around 300,000 taxpayers paid residual taxes late, while 530,000 property owners paid property tax after the due date.

The figures also include taxpayers who entered into payment arrangements with the Tax Administration. Late payment interest starts accruing immediately after the due date. The applicable late payment interest rate is 11%. The Tax Administration highlighted upcoming due dates, noting that residual tax payments fall due for approximately 293,000 individuals on 1 August, while property tax payments are due for 1.9 million property owners on 6 August. According to Senior Inspector Juha Villman, unexpected residual taxes may remain unpaid for extended periods. The Tax Administration reports that approximately 58,000 taxpayers still have unpaid residual taxes whose due dates fell in the previous year.
