Belgium Mandates New Certified Cash Register System (GKS 2.0) from 1 July 2026vat-news

Belgium's Federal Public Service Finance has published a Royal Decree on 3 June 2026 making GKS 2.0 — the new version of the registered cash register system — mandatory for hospitality businesses.

What changes:

GKS 2.0 delivers faster registers better aligned with current technology, reduced administrative follow-up, and near-real-time data transmission to the tax authority, which will also reduce the number of on-site inspections. Both the cash register and the fiscal data module (FDM, or "black box") must be certified as GKS 2.0 by the distributor or manufacturer.

Deadlines:

New hospitality businesses opening from 1 July 2026 must adopt GKS 2.0 immediately.

Existing businesses with a GKS already in place have a transition period based on when their current register was purchased. Those who purchased before 1 January 2018 must comply by 1 July 2027. Those who purchased between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2021 have until 1 July 2028. Those who purchased from 1 January 2022 onwards have until 1 January 2029.

Where a business has multiple registers, the date of the most recent purchase applies. The fiscal data module purchase date is not taken into account.

Checking your deadline:

Businesses can verify their specific deadline via the GKS e-service on the FPS Finance portal: tab My Profile > Known Business Units. Access requires either being the legal representative of the business, or having been assigned the role of "FODFin Restaurant Operators (GKS)" by the legal representative.

The FPS Finance advises businesses to contact their register supplier promptly to ensure a smooth and timely transition.
